Ceanothus Trewithen Blue

A particularly free-flowering ceanothus bred in Cornwall, Ceanothus arboreus Trewithen Blue is a large, vigorous, evergreen shrub or small tree for the larger garden, with graceful, arching branches. Can be grown free-standing or wall-trained. The leaves are large, oval, and a glossy deep-green. In May and June masses of deep blue, slightly scented flower-spikes almost smother the plant, making for a stunning display. Very attractive to early butterflies and bees.  Less hardy than some ceanothus, it likes a sunny, warm spot sheltered from cold, drying winds. Californian lilac Trewithen Blue holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Site: Sheltered; will tolerate salt air
Soils: Any really well-drained soil
Position: Full sun
Season of interest: All year, especially early summer
Hardiness: Frost-hardy
Height up to 20’ (6m)  Spread to 25’ (8m)
